Chapter 9

Duncan stirred in his bed, bumping into something warm and solid beside him. The form was soft and not unpleasant, so he moved closer and threw his arm around it. He couldn’t remember having a heated pillow, nor did pillows move.

And this one did, rolling over into the crook of his arm. Something tickled his nose, bringing him to the brink of being awake.

He blinked his eyes open and stared down at red hair in the soft glow of a nightlight that had been placed in one of the electrical outlets.

As he came fully awake, he realized where he was and who was lying in his arms, stirring him even more awake in much more dangerous ways.

Her rich red hair splayed out across the white pillowcase, much as it had the night he’d made love to her. The woman he’d always considered a friend had changed. She’d gone from a gangly, athletic teen to a shapely female with a body that had awakened in him a desire he’d never felt for any other woman.

Yes, he’d had too much to drink that night, but he hadn’t been so drunk he hadn’t known what he was doing.

Okay, well, he had skipped the part about using protection. But they’d been hot and heavy into making love before it had occurred to him. By then, it had been too late. He’d come inside her, and there was no going back after that.

Now, she lay in his arms, her cheek resting against his chest, her arm draped over his hip.

If he moved just a little, her hand would drop lower.

And just like that, his cock stiffened.

Like that night fifteen months ago, when he’d wanted her so badly, he’d lost his mind and taken what she’d so willingly given without thoughts of consequences. And he’d had to leave the next day.

Going from friends to lovers was not what he’d had in mind when he’d gone home on leave. But things happened when alcohol and a beautiful woman were involved. He remembered seeing her for the first time after his long absence.

He wouldn’t have recognized her if not for that bright, auburn hair hanging in riotous curls down her back.

If he didn’t move now, he’d be in the same way he’d been all those months ago. But, this time, he couldn’t blame his desire on alcohol.

He moved, with the good intention of leaving the bed. However, before he could get to the edge, Fiona’s leg slid over his and hooked around the back. She shifted closer, placing her sex against the top of his thigh.

Duncan swallowed a groan and tried to untangle himself from her arms and legs without waking her.

As he moved her arm, his knuckles brushed against her breast.

She caught his wrist and pressed his palm to one rounded orb.
